Definition
An impairment of the infants body function or structure due to adverse influences that occur at birth injuries may result from mechanical forces during birth process.

-0.7% birth result in birth injuries
- Birth injuries account for fewer than 2% of neonatal deaths
Risk factors
-Primi parity
• Small maternal structure
• Maternal pelvic anomalies
• Prolonged or unusually rapid labour
• Oligohydramnios
• Malpresentation of fetus
Use of forceps /vacuum extraction
• Very low birth weight / extreme prematurity
• Fetal macrosomia / large fetal head
• Fetal anomalies
• Cephalopelvic disproportion
